Hello flipped group!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This week lets talk about Bryce's relationship with his grand father and Juli. I think that Bryce will get closer with his grand father because the grand father's interest in Juli grows when he is helping her in the garden and Bryce owes him for not telling his parents about the "egg" situation. In the story on page 85 Bryce says "Thank you for not saying anything about it at dinner. I owe you." This shows you that Bryce has to start being nice to his grand father which could build a good or bad relationship between them.I think that Bryce should learn to "look before he leaps" and learns the consequences of his choices because Juli is really upset about the egg situation and he hurt her feelings.Bryce reminds me of Alice from Alice in wonderland. Neither of them thought about what they were doing before they did it and crazy things happened. Please write your opinions on the situation and let me know if anything else exciting happens.

  1. Hi Ellen,

Thanks for your great post. The egg situation really is hard on Juli isn't it. I couldn't believe how Bryce behaved and was surprised he could just keep on doing it without feeling guilty at all. I think the relationship between Bryce's grandfather and Juli is very important because everyone is Bryce's family seems to dismiss the grandfather. Yet Juli manages to take time to spend with him. What do you think about this relationship? How do you think the grandfather's relationship with Juli will impact Bryce's opinion of her?

I think the Alice in Wonderland comparison is very interesting. That Bryce rarely considers the opinions and feelings of others before acting.

What message do you think the author is trying to send us about people like Bryce?

  2. I think that you are right about that the chick on the cover represents that the are growing up just like the chickens in the story and like the one on the cover because their ideas and emotions for eachother are becoming flipped because in the book Juli is upset and mad at Bryce and Bryce feels like a jerk and feels bad about what he has done.

  3. I think that the author is trying to say that people like Bryce can be careless. They don't think about anybody but themselves. The author might be trying to teach us that we shouldn't be like Bryce, that it can be common to be like Bryce and the author could be making us aware about being careless so we can stop being like that.

  4. Ellen,

Very insightful thoughts! Why do you or members of your group think it is important that it is a series of small events that seem to add up to a larger problem between Bryce and Juli? Do you think that having read this book it would really change your actions of behaviour at all?

  5. Hi Ellen:

I think the grandfather brings so much to the story. He seems to be the one who can talk with Bryce honestly about what he (Bryce) should do. He is like a conscience. But somehow, because he is Bryce's grandfather, not his parent, he can say what he says without being "preachy". Does anyone else in the group have someone in their lives like that.

  6. Mr. Bowen,

We as a group might think a series of small events could effect Bryce and Juli's problem because Juli really likes Bryce and I don't think one event could change years worth of emotion. The series of small events would make Juli like Bryce less and less and possibly Bryce likes Juli more and more.

  7. Hi Ellen,

I think Bryce's relation with his grandfather will grow because on page 95, Bryce and his grandfather start talking together and then they go for a walk which lets Bryce learn more about his grandfather.

  8. I know that they had this walk but how does that change things between them and how is Juli involved in this?

  9. i dont think that this means that bryce is starting to be nicer to his grandpa. he is just thankful he kept his mouth shut, But it could mean that their bond might be growing.
    :D

  11. Well I like the grandpa (Chet) he seems really nice because you just don't randomly go over to the people across the street and help them fix their lawn and he's old but its nice like bryce would never do that ever but the grandpa seems very lonely so the think that keeps him from being emotionaly destroyed is Juli (because she remind him of his wife who died)

  12. During the fight between the grandpa and the family bryces dad says "I want to know why your father energy and inination to befriend a complete stranger when he's never done so much as toss a baseball around with his own grandson."
I think this shows how the grandpa relates to juli but not to bryce.

  13. I think the walk changes things between Bryce and his grandfather because since Bryce never actually had a conversation with his grandfather, he didn't really know about him.
    SOOOO......
Now, after the walk and the talk (it rymes!) Bryce starts to know about him and, give feelings to him.
